The first five steps
When I look at a process I write down the first five steps. Not all of them, just five. Anything past five is a guess, and a written guess starts to look like a plan.
The habit has one purpose: to make the blockage discussable. If three people describe step three differently, that is where the problem is — not in the tooling.
What usually surfaces is this: nobody sees the work end to end. Everyone knows their own part well, and nobody knows the gaps between them.
